The iconic radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico has collapsed, leaving astronomers and the Puerto Rican scientific community to mourn its demise. Last month, the US National Science Foundation NSF , which owns the observatory, had announced it would shut down the telescope permanently, citing safety concerns over its instability, and damage too extensive to repair.
Drone footage of the collapse, released by the NSF two days later, shows cables snapping at the top of one of the three towers from which the instrument platform was suspended. The platform plummets downward and crashes into the side of the dish. The tops of all three towers also snap off.
This video, taken by an observatory drone and released by the NSF on 3 December, shows the telescope's instrument platform fall and crash into the side of the dish. Prior to the failure, engineers had been exploring options to relieve some of the tension in the cables, including by relaxing other support cables to tilt the towers around the dish. The NSF had not yet decided to move forward with that plan when the platform collapsed. Some nearby buildings, including the control room and the visitor centre, survived the collapse.
An educational centre, however, seems to have been substantially damaged by the falling platform and cables. Questions remain about whether the cables were maintained properly over the years. Before its collapse, astronomers were using the telescope for a number of scientific studies, including radar assessments of near-Earth asteroids, to measure their threat to the planet.
Open to the public for self-guided tours. The facilities are open to the public Wednesday-Friday noon-4 p. Route , Bo. Esperanza, The Cambalache Forest Reserve located between Arecibo, Manati and Berceloneta, and covers an area of acres with an elevation raging from 5 to 50 meters above the sea level. IT is known as " vivero " nursery because it contains plantations of eucalyptus, teak, and mahoe trees. Camping allowed in two areas.
Water and showers, 8 trails and nearby beach. Rd km 6. In , the frontal section of the building was destroyed by a earth tremor. Repairs were made and a tower and clock were added to the building.
In , the building was restored to its original form. The Antonio Nery Juarbe Airport is located five miles southeast of the central business district of Arecibo and 50 miles west of San Juan. Originally utilized for military purposes, today, the airport is utilized for the general aviation, with a daily average of eight takeoffs and landings.
On March 31, , the airport and all its installations were transferred by the Navy U. Cueva Ventana window cave is a large cave located a top a limestone cliff, overlooking the Rio Grande de Arecibo valley.
Filled with stalagmites and stalactites. Route 10, Km Open daily, AM - PM. The Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park built by the Spaniards in , the lighthouse still in use and was automated in In the premises, you'll find a museum with exhibits, a recreation area featuring a special area for children with replicas of ancient sailing ships and a pirate's island, a restaurant and sports facilities.
Open Tue-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat-Sun 10am-7pm. Five decades ago, scientists sought a radio telescope that was close to the equator , according to Arecibo's website. This location would allow the telescope to track planets passing overhead, while also probing the nature of the ionosphere — the layer of the atmosphere in which charged particles produce the northern lights.
Cornell University's William Gordon, who pursued atmospheric studies, was one of the main forces behind Arecibo's construction, and its first director. The telescope was built in an area of limestone sinkholes that "provided a natural geometry. The reflective dish was 1, feet meters in diameter, feet 51 m deep, and covers an area of about 20 acres 81, square meters. A triangular platform was suspended feet m above the dish by three concrete towers.
The platform held the azimuth arm, a dome containing two subreflectors, and a set of antennae that could be tuned to a narrow band of frequencies. That dish — the size of 30 football fields — is 1, feet m wide.
On Sept. The Category 4 storm killed hundreds of people and caused widespread power outages that lasted for months. Power to the observatory was restored on Dec. The most significant damage was to the foot 29 meters "line feed" antenna, which was suspended above the radio dish. It broke off during the hurricane and punctured the dish below when it fell. Arecibo broadcast a pictorial message into space in , aiming for M13 — a globular cluster of stars.
It will take some time for the message to get there, as M13 is about 21, light-years away. According to SETI, the broadcast is roughly the same as a trillion-watt omnidirectional broadcast. In simple terms, the broadcast would be visible by just about any receiver in the galaxy that is about the same size as the antenna at Arecibo.
