However they have hardly changed since they were invented and you can get parts no matter how old. They are a design icon. Folding bikes feature a range of gear inches that are as wide as those of a standard bicycle, so it can definitely ride uphill.
Cycling as cross training for other sports is extremely popular and having a bike in your car trunk makes getting exercise a breeze. There you will find the serial number stamped into the frame. Designed by A. Marcelin of Paris in the late s, this was probably the first small-wheeled, open-framed, unisex, folding bike-in-a-bag brought into the UK.
The bike was produced in England in The Italian cavalry cycling corps with folding bikes strapped to their backs. The photo was published in an issue of National Geographic. After some quiet decades in the history of folding bikes, we started seeing more interests in the s and s. More manufacturers were interested in the niche market and some iconic folders during this period are the Moulton, Raleigh Twenty, Bickerton Portable, and Puch Pic-Nic. The Raleigh Twenty is very close to folding bikes these days, it features quick release levers for easy height adjustment of saddle and handlebar, inch wheels, Sturmey-Archer 3-speed gear with trigger control, caliper brakes and strong carrier.
The s marked a new milestone in the history when Andrew Ritchie began production of the first Brompton folding bike in Montague Bikes was founded in and they started making full-size folding bikes since then.

In , Andrew Ritchie founded a bicycle company named after the Brompton Oratory. Ritchie obtained backing from friends and sought to license the design, but after five years began manufacturing the bicycle design himself and by early Brompton Bicycles entered mass manufacture. The Brompton is an evolution of the Bickerton folding bike, made out of steel, a traditional bike material. The rear wheel folds under and the front wheel covers the chainset.
Which makes for a cubic folded shape. Hummingbird takes on the innovations in frame design, high performance wheels and easy foldability and combines them with the high end materials and design techniques of the 21st Century. Hummingbird was designed by Petre Craciun, who was interested in bikes and, like most urban cyclists, he still recalls coming out of the cinema and finding his pride and joy missing from the bike-stand.
He wanted a bike that was a bit less cumbersome , one that could be easily carried inside a cinema, college, or a flat, and all those myriad other buildings from which bicycles are effectively barred. A folding bike would fit the bill, but Petre was shocked to discover just how heavy the established machines were. Petre bought a light, wobbly Bickerton, which more or less did the job, but was far from being the solution they were hoping for.
There had to be a means of combining the satisfactory weight of the Bickerton with a more secure ride.
As his final year project, Petre decided to develop a lightweight folding bike. The key technology would be a one-piece carbon fibre frame, with a CNC-machined aluminium swingarm that could be quick-released - to rotate around the bottom bracket and fold away under the mainframe tube. This simple but rigid core could be equipped with a handlebar stem able to fold back against the frame holding everything together.
A carbon seatpost that dropped down through the main frame tube creating a neat and narrow package. The Brompton is particularly easy for me to carry on board the city bus, thus increasing my ridership considerably, as the racks on the front of buses are often filled with full-sized bikes.
Many folding bikes on the market are on the expensive side but there are also many very good affordable brands out there. For an a person living in a dense city where space comes at a premium, a folding bike is the logical choice.
I just moved to a new place a couple of suburbs away but there is no room to park my Bullitt securely so I leave it in a garage in the city. Folding or no folding, biking is good for you. Better still if its done on a folding bicycle. I agree. I have kiked all my life; mountain, road and for the past 12 years urban. I commute everywhere on my Brompton.
I run a tour company in which we conduct bicycle tours on Brompton only. I only have good things to say about folding bikes. I really enjoyed riding the foldable Brompton Bike.
When I visited my british friend at Lincoln City last April, we went around places and it was truely an experience riding the foldable bike. I have been planning to buy one here in the Philippines. Written by: Gwendal Castellan. Folding Bike Fan. August 13, Jody Brooks.
