This is to ensure that as the draw length and draw weight increase through tillering, there is the maximum amount of wood between the groove holding the string and the notch holding the handle.
The tillering stick is far longer than any reasonable draw length. The tillering stick can be leaned against a wall or other upright, or clamped in place. Thread starter caveman Start date Jun 7, Well I'm building my first red oak board bow from some specs on the tradgang website.
Keep in mind that I know practically nothing about traditional bows other than what Ive learned on here and the tradgang website.
Heres my question, what should I use for a tiller string on my initial tiller? The pics that this guy posted looked like he was using braided nylon rope. Also I havent cut my knocks yet so what is the best way to attatch the tiller string to the bow?
Also how long should the tiller string be? My bow is 68" long. One other question, When I get ready to brace with the actual bowstring I think you call this the short string how do I get a string? I can adjust this one to any length just by re-tying the knot in a different location. Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!
Thanks Pat you're a wealth of information. I have a heavy b dacron string that I made too, it was getting kinda ratty and I was looking for a replacement short of making a string. It was the first string I made, and consiquently the string I used to make my first bow. George Tsoukalas Trad Bowhunter Posts: There are builalongs on my site. I use a piece of parachute cord with a slip knot on each end.

Clothesline rope from Wal-mart with a couple slipknots has always worked for me. You fellers are making this sound simple John K Member Posts: 1, Would my bow stringer with the leather cups work.
